Be the Rock of Stability!
I’m talking about the phone again! Social media is rife with searches for validation, and it is often full of criticism and complaints. All of that can be a setup for poor mental health. It is that way for adults and even more so for kids. I just read an article that states mental health crises in children are now at an epidemic. In fact, one in three girls have contemplated suicide.
Chances are that social media and other online activities that contribute to this situation are not going away soon. Parents can try to regulate their kids’ usage, but it can be very difficult to monitor it 24-7, especially when there are work, school, household and other obligations.
So what can we do? Watch this video for more.
If you are a parent or want to support a child in some way, it is important for us to have good mental health ourselves so we can be the rock of stability for these kids. First, look at your own online activity. Are you participating in gossip, complaining, criticizing or are you seeking validation?
What about your own mental health? Do you have someone to talk to? Are you participating in any wellness services? It can be very important. When we are stable, we are in a better place to help these kids.
Tip: Pay more attention to your online activity and the activity of those you love. Check your mood before and after you engage online. If it is not serving you, maybe choose a more uplifting activity. Focus instead on your mental health and the health of those you love. Turn your attention away from what is happening online and come back to yourself so you can be stable. When you are stable, you are in a much better position of being there for others.
