Connecting With Our Origins for Mental Health!
Do you have a family altar? In many Asian and Latin cultures, a family altar is kept in the home. You may have heard of “All Souls Day” or “Day of the Dead” where families have a tradition of bringing out photographs or mementos that remind them of those who have passed on.
Well, having a connection to our ancestors is also a way to promote mental health! It can keep us grounded and connected to where we came from. Even if there was historical trauma in your family, there was also historical survival, or you wouldn’t be here. When we connect to this, we really have a sense of gratitude for those who came before.
In his book, Creating True Peace, the revered late teacher Thich Nhat Hanh stated, “In Vietnam, every home has an ancestral altar. On the anniversary of important events, such as the passing away of their father or mother, the entire family comes together at the house of the eldest child. This tradition is still alive in Vietnam, and everyone, including children, participates. It is a special opportunity to be with each other as one big family, to spend time together, to share a joyful meal and remember our loved ones.”
According to studies in mental health and prevention, connection with family can bring us a sense of resilience, a sense of coherence, and a sense of self-compassion.
Tip: Take some time to go through your family photos and pull out your favorite pictures of those who meant something to you. You can just lay them out or put them in frames. Use this time of All Souls Day to really connect with your ancestors and where you have come from. The Love that you have had for them never goes away. You can connect with them through Love.
