How to Stay Cool and Productive in the Heat (Corporate Wellness Tips)
The summer heat can be a challenge. If you work in a corporate environment, you may be driving to work on that freeway with the bright summer sun blasting in your window, working long daylight hours with those tight deadlines, and all in that stuffy office! All of it can all contribute to heat-related discomfort and the residual decreased productivity. In fact, studies have shown the stress of heat is an obstacle to economic activity. The accumulated financial loss due to heat stress is expected to reach US$2,400 billion by 2030.
So what can we do? No matter how low you are cranking your air conditioner, remember to always stay hydrated. This is probably the most important thing you can do to stay cool and alert in hot weather. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water with electrolytes. Read labels! Many electrolytes are made with sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Getting electrolyte powders are typically better choices.
Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. This will help your body to cool down by evaporation. If you do have to go outside, wear a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun's rays. Try using a cool compress and place a dab of peppermint oil your neck.
Most of all, listen to your body. If you're feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or nauseated, it's a sign that you're not getting enough fluids or that you're overheating. Take a break, drink some water, and cool down.
If you are an employer, you can make sure you are helping your employees be more comfortable (and therefore, more likely to be productive).
Provide plenty of water. Make sure there are water coolers or fountains available throughout the office.
Create a culture of wellness. Encourage employees to take breaks throughout the day, drink plenty of fluids, and dress in light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
By following these tips, you can stay cool and productive in the heat. And by working with your employer to create a culture of wellness, you can help ensure that everyone in your office is able to work comfortably and safely during the summer months.
